In our latest entry we speak with 76-year-old Maureen Greenwood from Stanmore, Middlesex. Maureen is still very much an active resident in her community and takes part in many different hobbies and crafts.
Maureen explained: “I still lead a very active life in that I am a painter and an art teacher. I run art classes from my home three mornings a week, which keeps me very much occupied. On my days off I enjoy playing a game or two of bridge.
“I also look after my own garden, which is about 60 square ft long and about 50 square ft wide and it is one of my great pleasures to see the colour in my garden during the spring and summer months.”
Despite living an active lifestyle, Maureen was still quite eager to have a personal alarm installed at her home. The keen gardener has been widowed for over eight years now and has been living by herself – which has led to her joining our service.
She said: “I ordered a personal alarm because I was very much aware that if I fell or passed out in my garden, nobody would know what had happened and I could be lying out there all night.
“Also, I live in a town house so I have a lot of stairs and, again, if I had a blackout and fell down the stairs I could be lying there for a long time before someone would find me.”
Here at Lifeline24, we hear all too often that an elderly or disabled resident has suffered from a fall at home and nobody has been around to help them. As Maureen touched upon, without an alarm in their home they could be laying on the floor for hours – which could be fatal depending on the injuries sustained.
