Lifeline Customer Stories - Sandra Watts

In our latest customer case study we speak with 67-year-old Sandra Watts. Our case studies are designed to give an insight into the lives of our customers so that more people can understand the difference a personal alarm can make.

Sandra lives in a village close to Wisbech with her pet dog Bella, who you can see in the lovely photo provided alongside this case study.

Explaining more about herself, Sandra said: "I retired early to look after my disabled parents until their death. I was a legal clerk mostly dealing with conveyancing, but I actually have experience in all areas of the law.

"I have osteoarthritis affecting most of my body, so I need to use a mobility scooter outdoors and to walk my dog. In my spare time I like to read and watch TV, as well as having outings with my family."

For those of you who may be unaware, osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis here in the United Kingdom. The main symptoms include joint pain and stiffness, with different cases being more severe than others - making it difficult to carry out everyday activities.

Before joining our service Sandra would text her brother on a daily basis to let him know that everything was okay, but following a recent incident at her Cambridgeshire home she was keen improve her safety.

Sandra explained: "I used to text one of my brothers every morning as a sign that I was okay. This changed however after a recent accident in my home. I realised after I had text him that if I did not have any visitors during the day I could end up being on the floor, badly injured, for 24 hours or more. Not only was I concerned for myself but also for my dog! Also as my brother is now quite ill he is not really in a position to offer much assistance and as his wife still works part-time, it may be that even if I could ring him I may not get an answer.

As it was, I was on the floor for two and a half hours until the paramedics arrived - in great discomfort and pain. I am not able to get up if I fall as I am not able to bend or kneel. The mobile phone signal in this area is also very poor and although I carry my mobile with me at all times, I was not able to get a signal on this occasion. Luckily I was able to reach my helping hand stick and reach the landline to call my neighbour. However if the fall had happened somewhere where a landline was not near to hand I would have been stuck were I was."
