• Written by Josh

We have now entered the final stretch and Christmas is nearly here. It’s time to meet up with family and friends, and enjoy eating, drink, playing games and watching classic Christmas movies.

There are plenty of Christmas movies out there but which ones are the best? To help you to decide which films to watch over the festive period, we have put together a list of our top five Christmas movies.

1. The Santa Clause (1994)

This writer’s favourite out of all the Christmas movies and one that is certain to bring the whole family together for an evening of Tim Allen and Comet the Reindeer! This film was released back in 1994, but is still loved today by children and adults alike.

Scott Calvin’s life is changed forever after ‘interesting’ events take place on Christmas Eve! His young son, Charlie, is awoken by noises coming from the roof. Scott goes to check outside only to find Santa Claus himself on his roof. A stunned Santa slips and falls from the roof – leading to Scott putting on the suit and reading the card that he finds inside.

From this moment on, Scott’s body and life changes as he turns into the new Santa! The Santa Claus is a movie full of humour, friendship and heartbreak as the whole family have to adapt to these odd changes!

2. The Muppet Christmas Carol

One for the children that will also satisfy older viewers who are fans of the famous Charles Dicken’s story. This is the Muppet’s version of the old classic, A Christmas Carol. Staring all your favourite characters such as The Great Gonzo (Charles Dickens), Kermit the Frog (Bob Cratchit) and Miss Piggy as Emily Cratchet.

Movie legend Michael Caine also stars as Ebenezer Scrooge – the man who hates everything about Christmas. The movie follows the events of Christmas Eve for Scrooge and the Cratchit family, who are struggling to get by and to look after their sick child, Tiny Tim.

Watch as Scrooge is visited by the ghosts of his old work colleagues and warned that if he doesn’t change his ways he will suffer from the same fate as they have! Scrooge is visited by the Ghosts of Christmas past, present and future and finally sees what this festive day is all about!

3. Home Alone

One of the most popular film franchises began in 1990. The plot for Home Alone is simple yet so, so effective. A young boy is accidentally left alone over Christmas when his family wake up late and nearly miss their flights to Paris.

Not only is he home alone, but thieves also have their eyes on his home and will do anything to get their hands on the goods inside. It’s the characters themselves which helps make this a classic – along with the hilarious slap-bang comedy violence!

Macauley Culkin’s performance made him a worldwide star during his childhood. The young Kevin McCallister fights back against the crooks and turns his house into a fortress, filled with hidden nails, paint tins, blow torches and even a tarantula!

After watching this movie you will almost definitely want to watch the sequel – which sees Kevin lost in New York City!

4. Miracle on 34th Street

An iconic Christmas movie from 1947. This film is sure to bring back some memories for you all! When the ‘santa’ at the department store Macys turns up drunk for work he is replaced by an elderly man called Kris Kringle. Such is his love for everything Christmas, Kringle is soon fired as people become worried about his state of mind.

A court case ensues and people slowly start to realise that there is something special about Mr Kringle – especially when it comes to his love of Christmas. There’s also a remake from 1994, starring Richard Attenborough as Kris Kringle.

5. Elf

People claim that is the funniest Christmas movie out there! Elf, which stars Will Ferrell, tells the story of a man who was raised as an elf at the North Pole thrown into the real world in search of his true identity.

The hapless Buddy searches New York for his real father, causing plenty of havoc along the way. His father is known to Santa as he was always on the naughty list due to his greed and selfishness! Elf is sure to get the entire family laughing, especially if you are a fan of Will Ferrell!
