Perched on the banks of the River Aire, Leeds is a major English city located in the ancient county of Yorkshire. Leeds is a regional hub, with a long a storied history of trade of commerce. The city hums with energy and activity every day of the week.

1. Pay a Visit to Harewood House

A stunning 18th Century stately home located just north of Leeds, in the quaint village of Harewood. This is one of Yorkshire’s best-preserved manor houses. Built between 1759 and 1771 for 1st Baron of Harewood Edwin Lascelles, this is a mightily impressive structure.

Featuring interiors designed by Robert Adams, visitors flock to Harewood House to enjoy the opulence within, whilst the immaculately landscaped gardens are also a draw for many. Priceless works of art adorn the walls here whilst there’s even a public park located on the adjacent land – perfect for a summertime stroll.

2. Gaze in Wonder at the Royal Armouries Museum

Housed in a beautiful modern building close to the city centre, Leeds Royal Armoury is one of the nation’s most impressive and extensive museums. Home to a range of military gems such as Henry VIII’s armour and a fascinating collection of experimental weaponry, this museum is ideal for those with a penchant for all things martial.

Hosting a range of events including talks and shows, the Royal Armouries Museum is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon in Leeds.

3. Take a Stroll in Roundhay Park

Over 700 acres of green space make up the sprawling Roundhay Park. This is one of Leeds’ most popular attractions, with over one million visitors each year. This is one of the largest city parks in the whole of Europe and is home to a variety of events and attractions, especially in the summertime when people watching here is at its finest!

Grab a cup of tea or an ice cream and relax at one of the cafes, taking in the lush green surrounds of this delightful park.

 

4. Breath in the History of Kirkstall Abbey

Just north of the city centre, this ruined Cistercian monastery dates all the way back to the 12th century. Lying on the banks of the River Aire in a lush park, this is a tranquil place that evokes a sense of reflective calm in visitors to its historic grounds.

Kirkstall Abbey was closed by Henry VIII during the infamous dissolution of the monasteries. However, it continues to attract thousands of visitors each year who come to marvel at the exceptionally well-preserved ruins amid atmospheric parkland.

5. Enjoy the Gardens at Temple Newsam House

The biggest draw of this delightful Tudor Jacobean mansion has to be the stunning gardens. They were designed by Capability Brown, the master landscaper of English country manors. Ideal for a warm weather stroll, the lush gardens are impeccably well maintained and emit a real sense of noble elegance to this day.

Inside the mansion, works of art decorate the oak-panelled walls and chandeliers hang from carved ceilings. Anybody with a penchant for history and classic interior design should pay a visit to Temple Newsam House. The building lies just east of Leeds and is one of the city’s most popular heritage attractions.
