Lifeline Customer Stories: Peter Johnson

Welcome to our Lifeline Alarm Case Study. This is a chance for you to see into some of our customer's lives and their experiences with our personal alarm systems. Our case studies will show the effect that the pendant alarms have had on our customers and their families, as well as the customers views on the service they have received from Lifeline24.

Our first case study takes a look at Mr Peter Johnson from the village of Docking, just outside of Kings Lynn, Norfolk.

About Mr Johnson

Mr Johnson purchased an alarm from Lifeline24 in 2014 due to recommendation and wishes of his friends and family.

The 69-year-old said: "I suffer from Muscular Dystrophy and I have a few other medical issues. After my wife passed away I was up here on my own so my son and my best friend both asked me to get some form of help for my home.

"I agreed and went online to find a suitable system for my home and I came across Lifeline24 right at the top of the page."

As mentioned, Mr Johnson suffers from Muscular Dystrophy, which is a genetic, progressive condition which weakens your muscles. The condition commonly begins by affecting a certain group of muscles in the body before eventually spreading to others.

This can make mobility very difficult for people just like Mr Johnson which is why he is pleased to have a personal alarm in his home.

He said: "I just feel that I don’t have to worry as much anymore. With me, I have a greater risk of falling with my legs giving way, and if I do then there is just no way of getting back up off the floor. The knowledge that the personal alarm is there, and if something bad does happen that it is there, means that there is no need to worry so much."

Peter was born in East London but lived in Spain for 25 years with his wife. During his time in Spain Mr Johnson owned various properties and bars. The couple decided to move back to England after they had retired, in order to see more of their grandchildren.

Helpful Response Team

Although he hasn't had to press his pendant in a medical emergency, Mr Johnson found out just how helpful and quick the Response Team are earlier this year when he accidentally pressed his button whilst he was sleeping.

He explained: "I must have slept differently to usual and accidentally pressed the button on my pendant. The first thing I knew about it was when the police and emergency services were forcing their way into my home - as I had left my key in the door by mistake.

The Response Team were brilliant and very helpful. They immediately called my neighbour, who often comes over to check on me, but when she was unable to get into my home the team phoned for the police and paramedics. They also called for my son in Kings Lynn and my friend over in Manchester - they had everything covered."

His experience that night has led to Mr Johnson, who wears his MyAmie Pendant around his neck, being full of praise for Lifeline24, our personal alarm systems and our 24/7 Response Team.

He said: "It’s a great boost to your self-confidence, and I feel much safer. It’s like having somebody there in your home and even though you can’t see them you just know that they are there waiting to help – it is brilliant.

The staff at Lifeline have been excellent when I have spoken to them. They are very friendly and have been very helpful with any questions I have had.  When I had the false alarm they called me a few times during and after the incident to make sure I was okay. They were very kind and understanding when I pressed the button by mistake and were happy to speak to me – you cannot fault that."

In his spare time Mr Johnson takes part in a Community Drive Scheme, which involves driving local residents who don't have any transport to places like the doctors and to the nursery.

A message to others

To those reading this that don't yet have a personal alarm, or to those who have family members who could benefit from one of our personal alarm systems, Mr Johnson has a simple message to send.

Get a Lifeline, get a bit of security, and take away all your worries. I think that most elderly or disabled people have got a fear that if anything happens, what are they going to do? I've had it in the past so they must have the fear of what if this happens to me. The Response Team do show that they do care for me and at the end of the day I really do feel safe with my Lifeline Alarm."
