Earth Day 2022: Small Steps to Save the Planet

• Written by Kyle

We are more aware now than ever before of the damage we are doing to our planet. Scientists say that many impacts of climate change are now irreversible. However, change is still possible, and even small steps can save the planet. In recognition of Earth Day on Friday 22nd of April, we are looking at small steps we can all take to save the planet.

Why Climate Change Matters

Many people look at climate change as something that doesn’t affect them. It’s far away and not as serious as the media makes it seem. However, the United Nations has declared that we are facing a climate emergency. This means that climate change is affecting everyone, whether you realise it or not.

Consequences of climate change include flooding, wildfires, and extreme weather like hurricanes. As sea levels rise, shoreline communities are displaced; hotter weather results in droughts that stop food from growing.

The UK imports 46% of its food from other countries. The effects of climate change could result in some of these countries struggling to produce enough goods to meet demand. This would result in food shortages around the world.

The more we do now to make a difference, the brighter the future could be for everyone.

Small Steps to Save the Planet

Of course, no one is asking you to single-handedly solve the climate crisis. Much of this responsibility rests on governments and corporations. However, everything we do contributes to a better future. And the more of us who take these steps, the bigger the difference we can make. In fact, if you start being more environmentally conscious it’s likely your friends and neighbours will too.

Pick an Eco-Friendly Energy Provider

Most energy suppliers are recognising the need to “go green”. This means an increasing number of companies are leaving coal and gas power behind and turning to renewable sources such as solar panels and wind farms. Choosing these companies as your energy providers nor only helps you reduce your carbon emissions, but also shows other companies that their consumers want eco-friendly providers.

Consider this list of green energy suppliers in the UK.

Switch to Energy Efficient Appliances

Fridges, ovens, and other household appliances tend to last for years. However, a long life does not necessarily mean they are good for the environment. If you have an older oven, freezer, or even microwave, then it may be worth upgrading to a more energy efficient model.

Whilst this may be an expensive initial investment, over time it will pay off. A more energy efficient appliance uses less electricity, which is ultimately good for the environment and your pocket. Look for electronics with an “A” rating, as this marks it as being the most efficient.

Use Less Water

You may be surprised to discover that water usage can contribute to carbon emissions. This is because lots of energy is used to pump, heat, and treat water. The average person uses 150 litres of water a day, but you can reduce this amount. Something as simple as taking shorter showers and repairing a dripping tap can drastically reduce your water usage.

The Energy Saving Trust have eight tips for saving water at home.

Plan Your Meals

You may wonder what this has to do with saving the planet, but the food we buy also contributes to our carbon footprint. Food has to be transported, packaged, and preserved, which all needs energy. Unfortunately, 9.5 million tonnes of food go to waste in the UK every year. Think about how much you may have thrown away because of expired best-before dates. Planning a meal in advance reduces the likelihood of food sitting in your cupboard or fridge, forgotten until it goes off. Instead, you know what you are eating and when.

And if there is anything you think may go off before you eat it, freeze it instead.

Unplug Your Electronics

The good news is that you aren’t using electricity if you accidentally leave an empty plug socket turned on. However, leaving devices plugged in and switched on at the wall does use electricity. Often, this is the case even if you think they’re turned off. Nowadays, most modern technology only goes into standby mode. This includes TVs and set top boxes. Try switching off devices you aren’t using. This includes your oven and microwave, especially if they have built-in clocks. You may notice this makes a difference to your energy bills.

Use Public Transport

If you’re still driving yourself around, it may be worth considering a change of pace. Whilst there are steps you can take to improve your car’s efficiency – keeping tyres inflated reduces fuel consumption, which reduces carbon emissions – public transport is better for the environment. Every time a person chooses to use a bus, that’s one less car on the road, and it’s not often a bus will be completely empty.

If you have reached State Pension age, you can even get a free bus pass. This will make those journeys much more affordable.

Shop Local

A lot of energy goes into transporting products around the world. This contributes to carbon emissions, which directly impacts climate change. Where possible, buy from local producers. This reduces the need for transportation and storage, and often means you will be getting fresher food and higher quality products.

You could even try gardening to grow your own fruits and vegetables.

Plant Trees

Trees are some of the most carbon absorbers on the planet. The more trees there are, the easier it is to counterbalance our carbon emissions. Unfortunately, 12 million hectares of forest are destroyed every year. As well as preventing trees from absorbing carbon, deforestation also releases extra emissions into the atmosphere. Fortunately, you can help, and not just by planting a lonely tree in your garden.

Donate to charities, like Trees for Cities, to help get more trees planted all around the world.
